BOOK SUGGESTION
THEME: Polar Animals

Children are always fascinated to find out that although penguins have wings, they are unable to fly. Flip-Flop, the main character in the book I have selected for this theme finds this fact very difficult to accept. The title of the book is "The Penguin Who Wanted to Fly". Imagine being a little penguin whose one dream is unattainable...however determined he may be. Children will find Flip-Flop's many attempts amusing. From a helicopter cap to a snow plane, Flip-Flop falls short of succeeding every time. Luckily, his friend Polar Bear is there to guide him towards the discovery of his own special skill - swimming!

I love reading this book to children because it always sparks a conversation about all the things they are good at. Whether it be singing, dancing, coloring, skating, playing soccer....or swimming like Flip-Flop, celebrate everything your group does beautifully! For those who are hesitant to name their talent, be their own Polar Bear friend and guide them towards their special skill! Why not create a poster or chart listing each child's talents. It may come in handy next time they are faced with a challenge!
