BOOK SUGGESTION
Children's books about recycling are difficult to find but the ones which are available in book stores are packed with interesting facts and lessons which encourage recycling.
I chose Recycle Every Day! for this theme. This book may be long for very young children. However, since the characters in the book try a different form of recycling each day of the week, you can easily break it down and read a few pages each day. Each page of this book will get children talking (and thinking) about recycling. Although most children are already aware that paper should be placed in a recycling bin, they may not know that composting, passing along clothing or used books, and using reusable containers and bags are just as important.
For older children, the book also introduces the concept of the days of the week and the months of the year. The story is about a bunny whose school is having an art contest to determine whose drawings will appear on their Community Recycling Calendar. Why not have children make drawings related to each day's recycling activity? Display them on a wall and have a contest of your own! Pick a winner for each day of the week.
Warning: This book will have you chanting Re-re-remember, re-re-recycle every day!
