Book suggestion theme: Birds

I found a book starring one of the most famous birds of all time (in my opinion)...Big Bird. Since I grew up watching Sesame Street, I am thrilled that the show is still aired today for children to enjoy learning as much as I did! It is one children's show which has definitely stood the test of time and just like the television show, this book contains a message your group will surely understand and take to heart!

The title of the book is Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bug. When Big Bird finds a lightning bug he places it in a jar to admire it. The bug's beautiful twinkle slowly fades away until it refuses to twinkle altogether. Big Bird does not hesitate to ask his Sesame Street friends for advice. One by one Bert, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Hoots the Owl provide suggestions. However, it is the very clever Grover who comes up with the existential question: Would we twinkle if we were in a jar?

Children are very sympathetic to the lightning bug's case. Chances are they won't request jars to store their findings the next time they go on a bug hunt of their own!

This book sets the stage for a fun physical activity. It can be done indoors or out. When you say "Twinkle, twinkle, little bugs", they run around pretending to fly and leap like happy little bugs. When you say "In the jar little bugs", they curl up in a ball on the floor. Alternate between twinkling bugs and captured bugs until your little bugs are too tired to twinkle!
