A few days prior to introducing your theme, ask mothers to provide a picture of themselves with their child, when he or she was a baby. Inform parents that the pictures will not be returned (photocopy them if necessary). Arrange the pictures on the floor, using them to delimit your circle time area. Invite children to find their picture and sit on it. Use the pictures to spark a discussion about the relationship children have with their mother.
Animated discussion period-Mother’s Day

Invite children to bring pictures of themselves at different ages to daycare. Use the pictures to create a special time scale. Explain to your group how, when their grandmothers and great-grandmothers were young, there were no color pictures.

Stack the pictures and insert a ring through each set of holes. The flipogram is easy to manipulate. Simply show children how they can lift a picture and flip it under the stack. Name each item with your group. Use the flipogram to encourage children to talk during circle time and to ask them questions about the theme.
Mother’s Day circle time fun
Every morning, hide an object associated with Mother’s Day within your daycare. Hide it so it can easily be found by the children in your group. However, finding it must still represent a challenge for them. As soon as they find the item, photograph it and print the picture. Display the pictures on a wall near your daycare entrance so children can share their daily findings with their parents at the end of the day.
Poni discovers and presents-Moms around the world

Educ-chat is a game which is made up of several different illustrations which represent subjects, verbs, and objects. They can be used to help children make complete sentences and enrich their vocabulary. (Open educ-chat-Mother’s Day) Print, cut out, and laminate the cards. Make three different piles (subjects, verbs, and objects). Ask children to pick three cards, one from each pile. Have them “read” the sentence. The sentences will sometimes be quite silly but you are sure to have fun. You may also choose to place the cards yourself and have children “read” the sentences.
Ask children to bring a picture or an object which reminds them of their mother to daycare with them. Set up a “mommy corner” which includes all the pictures and objects. Invite each child to identify the items which represent his/her mother.

Use colorful ribbon or fishing wire to hang baby-themed accessories from the ceiling in your daycare. Transform your role play area to make it look like a nursery. Set up a crib, a high chair, a playpen, etc. Add pacifiers, rattles, and other small items along with dolls in a variety of sizes.

Create a poster that will present both children and mothers and superstars. Simply glue pictures of mothers with their child on a large piece of paper. Laminate your poster and display it on a wall. Each morning, add the picture of a child’s mother.
Mother and grandmother tree
Select a picture or shape that you like (star, moon, heart, animal, etc.) and print several copies. On each one, glue a picture of a child’s mother or grandmother. Hang the pictures from a clothing hanger or a branch using string. Variation: Display pictures of each child’s family members in your relaxation area.
Door decorations-I love Mommy
(Open door decorations-I love Mommy) Print the decorations and use them to decorate your daycare door, hallway, or cloakroom. Cut the following out of cardboard: “I”, a heart (for “love”), and the letters to write the word “Mommy”. Let children draw on them and decorate them. Display the decorations where mothers are sure to see them.
Integrating Mother’s Day throughout your daycare
Here are a few ideas:
- For Mother’s Day, transform your circle time area by using adhesive paper to give it a flower shape. Next, let children press heart-shaped stickers on the floor.
- Hang purple and pink lights.
- Hang a Mother’s Day garland made by the children in your group. Hang flowers, hearts, and pictures of mothers from the ceiling.
- Provide cookie cutters, choosing shapes that are associated with Mother’s Day. Have children trace, cut out and stick the shapes on walls, floors, the ceiling, under tables, in your different workshops, and on toys.
- Provide Mother’s Day stickers.
- Cut out Mother’s Day shapes and glue them on paper plates. Use ribbon to tie the plates together to form a banner.
Mother’s Day tree
Create a variety of Mother’s Day decorations. Give each child a tree branch. Invite them to decorate a metal can. They can fill their can with sand and insert their branch. If you want to turn this into a group project, use a larger branch in a bucket full of sand. Either way, children can paint their branch and add glitter. When they are done, they can hang the Mother’s Day decorations they make in their Mother’s Day tree.
Mother’s Day mail
Create a unique Mother’s Day mailbox with your group. Encourage each child to make one or more drawings for his/her mother and drop them in your special mailbox. At the end of the day, invite mothers to check the mailbox to see if they have received mail. If you wish, this activity can last all week.

Prepare a thematic bin for your “mommy corner”. Include necklaces, mirrors, makeup, dresses, scarves, hats, dolls, baby bottles, a tea set, an apron, dishes, gardening tools, knitting and embroidery projects, etc.
Ask parents to provide pictures of each child’s mother, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers if possible. Display all pictures on a special wall within the daycare.

My mother’s eyes and smile
Ask each child’s mother to give you a picture of her. Cut each mother’s eyes and smile out and glue them on a large piece of cardboard. Invite children (and parents) to guess who each pair of eyes and each smile belongs to.

Mother’s Day wall
Create a special wall to celebrate mothers. Write things children have said about their mother on the wall and add drawings, pictures, etc. Display children’s Mother’s Day crafts on your wall. Hang flowers and pictures of each child’s mother in front of your wall. Be sure to set up this wall where everyone is sure to see it. If you wish, you could also hang a clothesline in front of your wall.
An envelope for Mommy
Prepare a special envelope for each child’s mother. During the theme, children can insert any crafts, drawings, or messages they prepare for their mother in their envelope. At the end of the week, children will be happy to hand their envelope to their mother who will love discovering its contents.

Use a puppet to encourage children to talk about a variety of subjects related to their mother. The puppet may help children who are shy overcome their shyness or help those who need language support. One thing is certain, the puppet will lead to many interesting discussions!
Listening to Mommy’s voice
Provide a portable recording device mothers can use to record their voice. They could, for example, sing a song. Listen to the recordings with the children in your group.
(Open reinvented scrabble-Mother’s Day) Print many copies of word flashcards and encourage children to use scrabble tiles to write the words. Manipulating the small tiles represents a great fine motor skill exercise. At the same time, children will notice which letters make up the different words.
Mother’s Day word association

Cut the second copy of each flashcard in half so that you have the word on one side and the illustration on the other side. Attach Velcro behind each piece. Stick a strip of Velcro to the right of each word flashcard on your board. Set the cut flashcards on a table and encourage children to find a word and illustration that go together and press them on your board, next to the corresponding flashcard. This activity will help children learn to associate the words to the correct items.
Mother’s Day word tree

Picture clue story

Mommy may I?
Call children one by one. When it is their turn, they must ask if they may execute various actions related to animals. For example, a child may say, “Mommy may I act like a frog?” If you accept, the child must hop like a frog until you call out his name again. On the other hand, you may decide to say, “No, you are part of the dog family!” In this case, the child would crawl on four legs and bark. Other examples of animals which are easy to imitate are a chicken, a horse, or a kangaroo.

- Act out several “mommy tasks”. Children name them. You may add accessories to make guessing easier.
- Water table: the entire family washes dishes after a meal. Include dishes, towels, dishwashing liquid, etc.

Surprise activity: Children prepare breakfast for their mother. Mothers cans join you between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. This special breakfast is a great opportunity for mothers to meet and socialize. Children will be so proud to have their mother with them in their daycare environment.
Snacks/lunch: Simply prepare a few different types of fruit, muffins, croissants, and coffee. Have children prepare an edible garland by threading Froot Loops cereal on licorice laces.

Before beginning the theme, prepare a chart listing the name of each child and four columns which can be used to add the information children discover about their mother during the theme. By requesting the necessary information ahead of time, you will better be able to support children in their discoveries as well as offer workshops which correspond to the mothers’ interests. You may give mothers the questionnaire a few weeks ahead of time to ensure you have plenty of time to prepare your activities. (Open questionnaire mothers) Print and give a copy to each mother.
For Mother’s Day, the educatall team suggests a week of special activities. You may follow the steps throughout the week or select only the activities you prefer. - A large coffee pot wrapped in pink paper and decorated with flowers.

Today is the last day of our special week about mothers. Your early childhood educator will need your help to prepare this afternoon’s party. Throughout the day, she will ask you to prepare various crafts to decorate the daycare and cover the table. She may even ask you to make a special hat for your mother. Organizing a party is a lot of work! When mothers arrive at the end of the day, your early childhood educator will play their favourite songs. Will you be able to recognize your mother’s favourite song?
It was a privilege to spend the week with you. I hope you had fun and that you were all able to discover a few things about your mother!

Sparkling Ruby Punch

46 oz of pineapple juice
3 cups of grapefruit juice
1 pint of cranberry juice
6 x 7 oz bottles of 7 up
2 ice cube trays filled with 7 up
- Pour 7 up into ice cube trays and freeze.
- Combine all liquids, except 7 up. Just prior to serving, slowly add 7 up and ice cubes.
Yield: Approximately 40 glasses of punch
Special Mother’s Day breakfast

We suggest you organize, with the help of your group, a special breakfast to honour mothers. It will be a busy week what with so many things to prepare to make the breakfast perfect! Children shall be cooks. They will begin by making their chef hats and decorating a large tablecloth as a group. Why not prepare a small show for the mothers to enjoy after breakfast?
Each child decorates two strips of heavy white paper with sparkles and crayons. Measure the children’s heads and staple the two strips together accordingly. Staple a small white garbage bag all the way around the contour of the hat. Children may wear their hat during breakfast.
A beautiful table
Presentation is important for such an important breakfast! You need a centerpiece, a nice tablecloth, and maybe hearts left over from Valentine’s Day. You may also simply add flowers. Purchase a white paper tablecloth. Have children decorate it. Create various kinds of flowers (tissue paper, fabric, Kleenexes, plastic, etc.) and display them in a centerpiece by pricking them into a Styrofoam block or a ball of modeling dough. If you prefer, simply place them in a vase.
Preparation of the show
Set up a theatre area to present the show. A simple way to create a great décor is to paint a large piece of cardboard (an appliance box) green. Punch small holes and insert flowers made by the children in your group. Children may stand in front of this background to recite a poem or sing a song. At the end of the recital, children can pick flowers off the décor to make a bouquet for their mother. Adding a small kiss on the cheek will steal the show for sure!

Activity ideas for the breakfast
Hunt and seek-My child
A mother sits, blindfolded. Children take turns standing in front of the mother who tries to recognize her own child by touching children’s faces.
Try to involve children as much as possible.
Cut a variety of fruit. Set them on a plate. Children slide the pieces onto skewers for their mother.
Purchase crêpes, whipped cream, and berries. Children decorate their mother’s crêpe.
A necklace for Mommy
Each child makes a necklace for his mother. Provide a bowl of “Froot Loops” cereal. Children thread them onto a piece of string liquorice.
This is my spot
(Open Game-This is my spot-Mother’s Day) Print two copies of each illustration. Deposit one illustration on the table and cover it with Mac-Tac. Place the other copy in a bag. Children take turns picking an illustration to determine their spot at the table for the day. You can also use them to determine naptime spots or their place in the task train.

ACTIVITIES FOR BABIES
“I love Mom” mobile
(Open craft-heart shape) Trace and cut various sizes of hearts. Decorate them with sparkles, lace, ribbon, cotton balls, confetti, etc. Glue the hearts back to back on either side of a piece of ribbon or string. Glue pictures of mothers and babies on the hearts. Hang from the ceiling.
Flowers, flowers, and more flowers
Fill a large bin with fabric flowers. Simply remove the flowers from the stem, keeping only the flowers and leaves. Let babies explore the textures and colors.
Soft like Mom
Prepare a bin filled with different types of fabric. Babies will appreciate touching and exploring the different textures… from very soft to rather rough.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND MOTOR SKILLS
The guessing bag
Fill a large bag with a variety of items associated with mothers. Children take turns feeling the bag (or inserting their hand) and trying to identify an object. They can each ask two questions. If they are unable to identify an object, they must skip their turn. If a child succeeds, he can be the leader of the game, the one who answers a friend’s questions.
Mother’s Day bowling
(Open bowling-Mother’s Day) Print and use the stickers to create different games. By pressing them on small plastic bottles, you can create an original bowling game. Arrange the bottles on a table. Children can roll a tennis ball towards the bowling pins. Give each child three chances. Who will be successful at making all the bowling pins fall down.

Fine motor skills-Crumpled Mother’s Day shapes
(Open Mother’s Day shapes) Print for each child. Have children tear and crumple pieces of tissue paper in a variety of colors. Once this is done, they can use the crumpled pieces of paper to fill the shapes. Display their work.
Create your very own celebrity boardwalk. Cut stars out of cardboard. Glue a picture of a child’s mother on each star. Using adhesive paper, arrange the stars on the floor in a hallway. Invite children to walk from one star to the next to discover your very special celebrities!
A necklace for Mommy (fine motor skills)
Encourage children to draw or paint on empty toilet paper rolls. They may also use stickers to decorate them. Cut each toilet paper roll into two or three pieces to create large necklace beads. Children can easily thread the beads on colorful string or ribbon to create a necklace for their mother.
Mother and grandmother costumes
Invite mothers and grandmothers to provide a variety of accessories they no longer wear: hats, scarves, slippers, old sunglasses, etc. Children will have fun dressing up and pretending they are mothers or grandmothers.
My mother is special
Have children sit in a circle on the floor. Name a child and roll a ball in his or her direction. As the child receives the ball, he must say, “My mother is special because…”, completing the sentence with a characteristic he associates with his mother.
Mommy, may I?
Call out children’s names one at a time. When they hear their name, they must request your permission to execute actions associated with different animals. For example, a child may ask, “Mommy, can I hop like a frog?” If you give the child permission, he or she hops around the daycare until you say his or her name again. You may also, for example, say, “No, you are not a frog. You are a member of the dog family.” The child must then walk on all fours and bark until his or her name is called out again.
Where are all the mothers hiding?
(Open color game-Mother’s Day) Print and laminate for durable, eco-friendly use. Hide the cards throughout your yard. Set a basket in one area and inform children that every time they find a card, they must set it in the basket before going back to search for more. The game continues until all the cards have been found.
Modeling flowers-Modeling dough and colors
(Open colorful flowers) Print and laminate. Arrange the flowers on the table and provide many different colors of modeling dough. Have children form small balls of dough. They can press each one on a petal of the flower of the corresponding color.
Pick a colorful clothespin
(Open colorful flowers) Print and stick each flower on a clothespin. Have each child pick a color. They can use the clothespin to pin their flower on their sweater. Once this step is done, children take turns picking a clothespin, naming the color of the flower, and pinning it on the child who is already wearing a flower of the corresponding color.
Mommy puzzle race
Collect pictures of mothers or photographs of the mothers of the children in your group and cut each one into two or three pieces using serrated edge scissors. Give each child one puzzle piece and hide the remaining pieces. Invite children to search for their missing pieces so they can complete their puzzle.
(Open lacing-Mother’s Day) Print, laminate, and punch holes around the contour of each shape. Give each child a shoelace or ribbon they can thread through the holes.
Children search within the daycare for objects which remind them of their mother. Prior to the activity, hide a scarf, lipstick, glasses, necklaces, sweaters, hats, high-heeled shoes, etc.
This game is played like “Simon says”. Give children instructions (just like their mothers do). If you say, “Mommy says...” at the beginning of the sentence they must do whatever it is you asked them to do. You may, for example, ask them to brush their teeth, go to sleep, eat, etc.
A walk with Mommy
Organize a walk in your neighborhood with children’s mothers. Stop at the park to eat a special snack and play together. If there is a pedestrian path nearby, this is the perfect occasion to explore it.
Have children draw their mother using sidewalk chalk. When the mothers arrive at the end of the day, invite them to guess which portrait their child made.
Collect as many toy strollers as possible and bring them outside so that children can take their dolls for a walk.
Hang your jumping ropes so they look like clotheslines. Provide a container filled with facecloths and doll clothing. Children will love hanging them on the clothesline!
MUSICAL AND RHYTHMIC ACTIVITIES
Musical Mother’s Day
(Open picture game-My mother’s profession) Print and laminate the pictures. Arrange them on the floor within your daycare. To the sound of music, children move around the daycare. When the music stops, they must quickly find a picture to stand on. Variation: If you wish, you can also remove a picture after each round to increase the level of difficulty. Several children will have to stand on the same picture.
Invite mothers to record a short message for their child. Children must guess who the voices belong to.
Mommy, you are invited
Play music as children arrive in the morning (or leave in the afternoon). Invite mothers to dance with you for a few minutes.
ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE SELF-ESTEEM
The good job flower
(Open Good job flower) Print and laminate. Print one petal for each child in your group. You may have children color their petal, add a picture of each child, or have children choose a sticker to decorate their petal. Throughout the day, use a dry-erase marker to write a nice gesture or a kind act on each child’s petal. Even the smallest positive actions will do! During the afternoon snack, read them for the group and applaud what a good job they did!
ACTIVITIES THAT TEACH SOCIAL ABILITIES
Mommy can you help me?
Children remove their socks. One child plays the role of the mother. He or she must put the socks on all the children! This is the perfect occasion for foot massages. Children may use their hands or tennis balls.
Two mothers game
(Open game-Two mothers) Print and laminate. Glue a stick behind each illustration so you can use them as puppets. Stand at one end of your daycare. Have children stand at the opposite end of the room, with their back against the wall. Show them one of the mothers. They must hop towards you. When you hold up the other mother, they must stop in their tracks and remain perfectly still, like a statue. Alternate between both mothers until children have reached you. Repeat.
Roll and color-3D-Mother’s Day
(Open roll and color-3D-Mother’s Day) Print for each child. Print and assemble the die. Children take turns rolling the die. They color a specific part, per the number the die lands on. The first child to have completely colored his or her picture wins.
(Open game-Four mothers) Print, glue the cards on opaque cardboard and cut them out. Arrange all the cards upside down on the floor or table (so you can’t see the illustrations). Children take turns rolling a die. Every time a child rolls a “1”, he can turn a card. If he doesn’t already have this mother in front of him, he keeps it and places it in front of him for everyone to see. The first child who has collected all four mothers wins.
Playing with pictures of mothers
Take a close-up picture of each child’s mother. Print the pictures and use them for different activities.
- Use the pictures to create two-piece puzzles. For an increased challenge, mix all the puzzle pieces together and let children search for the pieces that go together.
- Print two copies of each picture and have fun finding identical pictures with your group.
- Ask each mother to wear a different color sweater on picture day. Use the pictures for color recognition activities and games.
With older toddlers, photograph each child as well. Have fun associating each child to his or her mother.
(Open animal mothers) Print, laminate, and cut out. The pictures represent mothers and babies. Use them for different games:
- A traditional memory game.
- Where is my baby? Distribute the cards representing animal mothers and arrange the cards representing animal babies face down on a table or on the floor. Children take turns picking a card. If the card represents their animal mother’s baby, they keep it. If not, they must turn the card over again and wait for their next turn.
- Treasure hunt. Hide the animal mothers within your daycare. Give each child a card illustrating an animal baby. Each child searches for his animal’s mother.
Homemade wooden puzzles
Print pictures of mothers. Color them if necessary. Arrange several Popsicle sticks in a row on a table and glue a picture on top of them. Cut along each stick. Repeat these steps for each picture. Hand children a set of Popsicle sticks and invite them to place them in the correct order to complete the picture.
Roll and color-Mother’s Day
(Open roll and color-Mother’s Day) Print for each child. This game can be done individually or enjoyed as a group activity. Children roll a die, count the dots, and color the corresponding part.

Every time the die lands on “1”, they pick a card and look at it without showing it to the other children. Have each child surprise his mother with a phone call at work or a message left on the answering machine at home.

Collect a variety of old purses and handbags. Ask mothers if they have old bags they no longer use that they could give you. Fill them with different items that mothers often carry in their purse such as a toy telephone, a wallet, a hairbrush, a book, lipstick, etc. Encourage children to discover the contents of the handbags. They will have fun emptying them and putting the items back in as they see fit.

Invite parents to have fun with your photo booth too. Print and display the pictures. They will represent great souvenirs!

Children take turns picking a word and using gestures to help others guess what it is. The child who guesses correctly can mime the next word.
You will need pictures of each child as well as his family members. Invite children to flip through the pages of a magazine and pick a picture. Help children cut out the face of each of their family members so they can glue them on the picture they chose.
My treasure chest
Fill a large chest with clothing items, shoes, hats, jewellery, etc. Let children dress up like a mother whenever they feel like it throughout the theme.
Messages from the heart
(Open messages from the heart for moms) Print for each child and have them cut out their heart and decorate it as they wish. You will need a large piece of cardboard. Fold each heart in half and glue one half of each one on your piece of cardboard. Arrange the hearts so that they are dispersed on your cardboard. Write a short Mother’s Day wish on each heart, on the section that is not glued to the cardboard.
I know my mother
Encourage children to draw their mother. Ask them different questions about their mother (activities she enjoys, her favorite food, her favorite color, her eye color, etc.). Write each child’s responses around his drawing. These drawings will make great Mother’s Day gifts.
Have each child decorate a clear plastic container. Use small pieces of cardstock to write kind words children would like to say to their mother. Children insert the messages in their container. These kind word containers will make great Mother’s Day gifts. Mothers will enjoy reading one message per day…

Help each child call his/her mother or leave a voicemail message at work or at home during the day.

Collect empty food packages. Deposit them throughout the daycare. Give each child a grocery bag and have them pretend they are grocery shopping.
Mommy rocks the baby
Give each child a doll or stuffed animal. To the sound of music, have them rock their baby. Variation: Rock each child.
Play a game of “Simon says” but use “Mommy says” instead. Use actions which are normally done by mothers such as: go to sleep, brush your teeth, wash your hands, etc. If you don’t say “Mommy says” first, children must remain still.

Call out several names. When a child hears his mother’s name, he must run to a designated area.

Provide plastic food items, dishes, and utensils in your kitchen area. Children take turns cooking. The other children can ask the child playing the role of the mother to prepare specific meals.
Make an audio cassette (tape recorder) or CD (computer and microphone) of children singing a few songs or saying kind words. Wrap for the perfect gift!
Invite children to bring an object belonging to their mother to the daycare. It could be a necklace, a scarf, a hat, etc. Children will love to wear it throughout the day.
Box of kisses
(Open model-Box of kisses) Print for each child. Children decorate their box. When they are done, encourage them to open the box and add a ton of kisses. Tell them to hurry up and close the box so the kisses don’t fly away! At the end of the day, children can give their box of kisses to their mother. Variation: A small cardboard box, a small medicine bottle, or a container for a roll of film could also do just fine!
Flower of love
Draw a large daisy for each child and cut it out. If children are old enough, have them cut their daisy. Ask each child to tell you kind words they would like to tell their mother. Write them on the petals.
Message in a bottle
Decorate a plastic bottle (water bottle for example) with paint, colourful paper, sparkles... Roll up a drawing the child made and insert it in the bottle. Place the bottles in a large container filled with water. At the end of the week, invite each mother to pick a bottle, open it, and guess if the drawing was done by her child or not. If not, she places the drawing back in the bottle and picks another one until she finds the correct drawing.
Scented balls for bath time

- 4 cups of Epsom salt
- Essential oils (orange, lavender, mint, etc.) if you wish to make scented balls (optional)
- In a bowl, pour approximately 4 cups of Epsom salt. Add approximately 1 tablespoon of water for each cup of salt (one tablespoon at a time) until the texture resembles wet sand.
- Add a few drops of essential oil if you wish to make scented balls and mix well.
- You may also add a few drops of food coloring if you wish to make colourful balls, but I prefer a natural “snowball” color.
- Compact the mixture in a spherical silicone mold or use an ice cream scoop to form compact balls.
- You may also choose to use molds of different shapes.
- Remove the balls from the molds and deposit them on a baking sheet.
- Let the balls air dry for 2 to 3 days or place them in a 200 °F oven for 2 to 3 hours to accelerate the drying process.
- Place the balls in clear bags and add pretty ribbon. They make great gifts!
Creative recipe-Decorative soaps for Mom

You will need:
Glycerin soap bar (clear or white)
Candy, cake, or soap molds
A glass measuring cup
Wooden Popsicle sticks
- Cut your bar of soap into 3 or 4 pieces.
- Deposit the pieces of glycerin in the measuring cup and microwave for approximately 20 seconds at first, and then for 10-second intervals until the soap is completely liquid.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to tint the soap and stir to incorporate the color evenly. If you wish to create several colors of soap, pour glycerin in small containers and add a different color to each.
- Pour the glycerin into the molds and set aside for approximately 1 hour. The glycerin will harden. This may require more time, depending on the type of glycerin used.
- You may place the molds in the freezer for approximately 10 minutes prior to removing the soaps from the molds. They will be easier to remove.
- Try different color and shape combinations.
- You may also add 1 or 2 drops of essential oil to scent the soaps.
- Wrap the soaps in pretty paper. They are perfect for gifts!
Note: It is very important that you use ONLY glycerin soap.
Your modeling dough workshop becomes a kitchen. Children pretend to prepare delicious meals just like their mother does. Be sure to provide kitchen utensils, cake pans, cookie cutters, etc.
Set up a water table or a container filled with water. Add sponges and soap bubbles. Let children wash the plastic dishes from your kitchen area.
Children love cleaning! Provide sponges, a feather duster, wet towels, etc. Take advantage of this activity to disinfect toys with help from your group.
A flower for Mom
How do flowers drink?
FLOWERS AND WATER
Hypotheses: Ask children how flowers absorb rain. Through their petals? Stems? Leaves?
A few white flowers (daisies or other kind)
A few celery sticks with leaves attached
Food colouring (at least two colors)
A few small glasses
- Pour water into a glass until it is ¾ full.
- Add a few drops of food colouring and stir well.
- Deposit a flower in the glass.
- Repeat using other colours. You can use the celery sticks too.
- You have to wait several minutes before beginning to see the result of this experiment. Be patient!
- Leave the flowers in the food colouring overnight for best results.
Explanations: Flowers drink water starting from their lowest extremity. The water slowly travels upwards through tiny pipes in the stem. Your water was colourful, and now you have multicoloured flowers! The principle is the same for all types of plants. Trees get water from the ground through their roots. The water travels up to the highest leaves!
Invite a grandmother to come teach children how to bake a special treat.
The old days
Prepare recipes that our grandmothers made with your group: apple pie, cookies, etc. If there are children from various ethnic backgrounds in your group, this activity may be the perfect time to explore recipes from their country of origin.
My grandmother’s recipe
Ask parents to share one of their mother’s recipes with you. Each day, prepare one of the recipes provided.
Creative recipe-Personalized lip balm

2 tablespoons of vegetable shortening
1 tablespoon of powdered juice (any flavour)
1 small plastic container with a lid (like the ones for rolls of 35 mm film)
- Combine shortening and powder in a small microwavable bowl.
- Melt the mixture in a microwave oven for approximately 30 seconds (mixture must be liquid).
- Pour the mixture into the small plastic container.
- Place the container in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes or until set.
- Use like store-bought lip balm.
Cookies in a jar gift

Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Yields: approximately 30 cookies
375 mL (1 ½ cup) all-purpose flour, unbleached
7.5 mL (1 ½ tsp) of baking powder
1 mL (¼ tsp) of salt
250 mL (1 cup) brown sugar
140 g (5 oz) semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
250 mL (1 cup) of quick oats
- Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in the bottom of a 4-cup jar. Deposit brown sugar on top and press gently. Continue with the chocolate and end with the oats. You should have four separate layers. Close the jar. (Open gift tag-cookies) Include the gift tag which explains how to make the cookies.
Every day, prepare a sweet treat with your group: cookies shaped like hearts, small muffins decorated with icing, small chocolates, etc.
A special snack
Ask each mother to prepare something special for the group’s snack. Children will be very proud to share their mother’s homemade treat with their friends.
A necklace for Mom
Prepare a salt dough recipe. Make heart shapes with the dough. Use a drinking straw to punch a hole at the top of the heart. Once the dough is cooked and cooled, let children paint the heart. Thread a string or ribbon through the hole. Variation: You may also make a necklace using painted pasta.
A ring for Mom
Prepare dough using this recipe:
Mix 2 cups of flour, ½ cup of salt, and ¾ cup of water until smooth. Let children play with the dough for a short period of time. To make a ring, roll a piece of dough around each child’s finger (or your own), making sure it is big enough. Flatten the top so you can attach a decorative jewel using hot glue once the ring is cooked. Use a piece of aluminum paper to fill the hole and bake at 250⁰F. It may take over an hour for the ring to be completely cooked. Have children paint their ring. Add a coat of varnish once the paint is dry.

My mother’s portrait
Ask each child to draw his mother. To help them, ask mothers to provide a picture. Help children notice the various features such as hair color, eyes, shape of the face, etc. Glue the portrait onto a thick cardboard rectangle. Have children decorate the frame with various arts & crafts materials. Hang the portraits on the wall.
Children fill an empty toilet paper roll with messages for their mother. We have prepared a few for you. (Open memo-Mother’s Day) You may also slide candy pieces inside. Wrap the roll with tissue paper and decorate. Tie each end with ribbon. Children can give one to their mother every day of the week.
Jewellery for Mom
(Open jewel models) Print. Cut a 2 cm strip of colourful construction paper. Using glue, overlap the jewels on the strip, alternating colors.
A mom puppet
Draw a face on construction paper and glue it onto the round tip of a plastic spoon. Use fabric or paper to make clothing for the puppet.
MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS.
THEMATIC CRAFT BOX-MOTHER’S DAY
Fill a large container with red, pink, purple, yellow, green, and white markers, waxed crayons, and colored pencils. Add glitter to a few tubes of glue. Fill small containers with flower-shaped stickers and confetti. Provide pretty feathers and all kinds of paper (tissue paper, crêpe paper, metallic paper, cellophane paper, etc.).
My Mother’s Day hat
(Open Mother’s Day hat) Print and cut out. Have children decorate their hat. Help them assemble it. They will be proud to wear it. Organize a parade throughout your daycare or neighborhood.
A medal for Mommy
Cut two circles out of heavy cardboard for each child. Have children draw something for their mother on one circle. On the second circle, write a special message for their mother (examples: Best Mom, Happy Mother’s Day, etc.). Glue both circles together, back to back, and use a hole-punch to make a hole at the top of each child’s medal. Thread a pretty ribbon through the hole and knot both ends together.
A hat for Mommy
Make a hat for the mother of each child. Simply cut a strip of construction paper and have children draw on it. Use adhesive tape to drape pieces of crepe paper garlands from the strips of paper to create movement. Form a circle with each child’s strip of paper. You can glue a piece of Velcro on the ends so that mothers will be able to adjust their hat per the circumference of their head. If you wish, you can have children create a matching hat for themselves. They will be so happy to wear their hat with their mother.
A little me for Mommy
Give each child a clear plastic drinking glass. Glue a picture of each child inside his or her glass. Fill the glasses with soil until they are ¾ full. Plant grass seeds or herbs. Encourage each child to water his or her seeds regularly. Slowly, the grass or herbs will grow. They will look like hair. These make great Mother’s Day gifts.
Tissue paper flower bouquet
Cut several circles out of different colors of tissue paper. For each flower, you will need six circles. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the circles, in the center. Separate the layers to represent flowers. If you wish, add a few drops of perfume or essential oil to each flower to create a scented bouquet.
Use flowers of all kinds (tissue paper, plastic, fabric, etc.) to create a magnificent centerpiece. Prick the flowers in a floral block or a ball of modeling dough. Use your centerpiece to decorate your table or your daycare entrance for your Mother’s Day breakfast.
A flower a day
(Open a flower a day) Print for each child. Cut out the flowers and let children decorate and color them. Each child will need seven flowers. Help them write a short message for their mother on each flower. Insert a pipe cleaner in the center of each flower. Children can give their mother their bouquet for Mother’s Day. Every day of the week, mothers can pick a flower and read a message from their child. What a great way to brighten their day!
Cut the bottom off three celery heads. Pour pink, red, and purple poster paint in three different aluminum pie plates. Set the bottom of a celery head in each plate. Give each child a piece of heavy cardboard. Invite children to press the celery that has been dipped in the color of their choice on their piece of cardboard to represent a flower. Once the paint is dry, ask children to cut around the contour of their flower (no need for perfection here). Help them glue a piece of elastic fabric under their flower. If you wish, children can add glitter, sequins, or feathers. Knot the ends of the elastic fabric together to create bracelets. Mothers will love wearing their corsage for Mother’s Day.
A video for Mommy
Children can take turns hiding behind a canvas, a furniture item, or a tree. Film them individually as they pop out of their hiding place to blow a kiss or offer a virtual hug for their mother as they say, “Happy Mother’s Day!”. Send each child’s video to his mother via email. Mothers will love watching the video when they miss their child at work or simply to enjoy a short break during the day.
I am growing
You most likely have several pictures of the children in your group. If you don’t, ask fathers to give you pictures of their child, at different ages. If possible, collect one picture of each child for each year. Cut each picture, keeping only children’s faces. Glue each one on a flower shape that you have cut out of colorful construction paper. Stick a Popsicle stick behind each flower. Have children cut leaf shapes out of green construction paper. They can glue a leaf on either side of each flower stem. Finally, give each child a piece of floral foam and encourage them to prick the Popsicle stick stems in the foam to represent a flower garden. Help children understand how, just like flowers, they are growing each day, each year. This adorable project makes a great Mother’s Day gift.
Take a break Mommy
Purchase loose leaf tea in bulk. If you wish, purchase several different types of tea. Encourage children to smell them to offer an interesting sensory activity. Give each child a small plastic Ziploc bag. Let children transfer a small quantity of the tea of their choice to their bag using measuring spoons. Seal the bags. Provide stickers, ribbon, feathers, fabric flowers, etc. Let children decorate their tea bag as they wish. This simple gift can be inserted in a Mother’s Day greeting card.
The gift of time spent together
We all know that what makes mothers happy most is spending time with their child. With your group, select a simple recipe that requires very few ingredients such as a homemade pudding or pancake mix. Prepare the ingredients and have children add them to a Ziploc bag, one at a time. Identify each bag. Print the selected recipe and have children decorate it with stickers, crayons, stamps, etc. before inserting both the ingredients and the recipe in a pretty gift bag. Children will be happy to give it to their mother for Mother’s Day, but most of all, they will be happy to prepare the recipe with her.
Dinner is ready
Give mothers a break by preparing dinner for them, with the help of their child. What a wonderful activity that is sure to please children too! Select a simple recipe so children can participate in its preparation from beginning to end. For example, you could prepare macaroni and cheese. Children could therefore help you cut vegetables (with plastic knives), stir, measure, etc. Once the dish is ready, give each child an aluminum dish and let them use a large spoon to fill it with macaroni. Encourage children to decorate a large white sticker on which you have written “Dinner is ready!” Set the dishes in the refrigerator until the end of the day. Children will be so proud to hand their prepared dish to their mother or take it home to surprise her.
Photograph each child in your group and print the pictures. Cut each picture, keeping only children’s faces. Purchase several pink pens and hand one to each child. Invite them to glue their tiny picture on a foam shape, a flower for example. Next, let them choose a pretty ribbon. They will need a piece that measures approximately 8 cm. Using hot glue, help them stick one end of their ribbon behind their foam shape. Wrap the other end of the ribbon around the upper tip of their pen. Apply a few drops of hot glue to hold it in place and complete this very practical Mother’s Day gift.
The gift of fresh herbs
A few weeks before Mother’s Day, plant herbs (or purchase herbs that are already planted in soil at your local supermarket or garden center) with your group. Simply fill tiny pots with soil, pour a few seeds on top, and water them regularly. Children will love watching the herbs grow on a sunny windowsill. Before they take them home, let them wrap a pretty ribbon around their pot. If you wish, you could have children press their tiny hands in poster paint and then on their pot for a more personalized gift that will also represent a great souvenir.
In a big-box store, purchase a few large containers filled with different types of jelly beans, gumdrops, and jujubes. Try to find pink, purple, and red candy. Pour the contents of the containers on large baking sheets. Provide small tongs children can use to deposit candy in a small clear plastic or glass container one at a time. When they are done, help children seal their container with a lid. Give each child a label on which you have written “I am stuck on you”. Let children decorate their label with flower-shaped stickers and glitter before adding it to their container.
Purchase several different colors of nail polish. At the end of the day, encourage mothers to let their child pamper them during the time it takes you to share the day’s events. Children will love painting their mother’s nails (or toes). You may want to send an invitation to mothers ahead of time, so they can plan their schedule accordingly. If a child’s mother cannot be present, let her child bring a bottle of nail polish home so she can still be spoiled!
Froot Loops jewellery
Use Froot Loops cereal to design colorful jewellery for mothers. Provide pipe cleaners and show children how they can very simply insert the pipe cleaners in the cereal. Create bracelets, necklaces, keychains, etc. Children will be proud to offer their creations to their mother as Mother’s Day gifts.

Purchase small canvas panels in a big-box store. Have children dip the tip of a plastic fork in poster paint and then use it to paint flowers on their canvas panel. Repeat this operation several times using different colors. Use ribbon, paint, or markers to draw stems. This is a beautiful Mother’s Day gift.
Door signs for Mom
(Open door signs for Mom) Print several copies so that each child can select the one he/she prefers. Cut a piece of cardboard, slightly bigger than the door sign and glue the sign on it. Children can color and decorate the door sign and even add a picture.
“Digital” frame for Mom
You will need a transparent CD case, cardboard, a family picture (or a picture of the child) and creativity. Cut a frame out of the cardboard by tracing the contour of the CD case. Glue the picture on the case and then glue the frame on top. Encourage children to decorate the frame with a variety of decorative elements (heart-shaped confetti, flowers, etc.).

Have children draw on a large sheet of paper. Encourage them to draw their mother and activities they enjoy doing with her. Laminate for extra durability.

You will need two paper plates per child. Cut one of the plates to obtain two equal parts and discard one half. Apply glue around the contour of the cut plate and press it on the bottom part of the full plate, forming a pouch. Use a hole-punch to make holes around the upper portion of the full plate (the part without glue). Encourage children to thread pretty yarn through the holes to decorate their letter carrier. They can also glue hearts on the bottom section if they wish.
Candleholder just for Mom
Purchase one glass per child. Cognac glasses are perfect. Ask children to cover the outside of their glass with pastel-coloured tissue paper and Mod Podge. Once dry, it will sparkle and look like real stained glass. Insert a tea-light and wrap.
Purchase one white cup per child (and the matching saucer). Let children paint them with porcelain paint. Be sure to offer a single color at a time. Let one color dry before adding a new one to avoid colors mixing together. Ask children to describe how much they love their mother. Add their words to the cup or saucer. Bake in the oven to seal the paint (follow manufacturer’s instructions). Mothers’ mornings will be filled with happy thoughts.
Purchase small, inexpensive jewellery boxes, one per child. There are several different types to choose from: cardboard, wood, plastic, etc. Let children paint their jewellery box and decorate it with precious gems. They will be so proud to give their mother their jewellery box!
Collect beads of all kinds. Let children make a necklace or bracelet for their mother. Help them wrap their creation in tissue paper and add ribbon.
Personalized tissue box
Gently open the two ends of a tissue box (so that the box lies flat). Remove the bottom. Use glue to put the box back together inside out (design on the inside). Provide a variety of arts & crafts material and let children decorate their box for their mom. To use, simply slide over another tissue box.

Garden of kind words
Use small pieces of cardboard in different colors (approximately 10 cm wide x 4 cm high). The quantity of cardboard needed depends on children’s inspiration. Have children name kind words and write them on the pieces of cardboard (one word per piece). Glue a wooden skewer or pipe cleaner to each piece of cardboard. Deposit a foam block in the bottom of a flower pot and plant the kind words in the foam.
A special bouquet
Purchase Styrofoam shapes (circle, heart, etc.) or cut Styrofoam to make your own original shapes. Decorate them with paint or arts & crafts material (tissue paper, sparkles, felt, etc.) Use wooden skewers, pieces of wood, or real branches to represent stems for your Styrofoam shapes. Your flowers are ready! Deposit a foam block in the bottom of a flower pot and plant your flowers. Wrap this very special bouquet in cellophane paper.
Matching placemat and napkin
Provide stamps with pretty Mother’s Day designs (flowers, butterflies, etc.) Give each child one sheet of white paper. Cut 5 cm off of each side. Encourage children to use the stamps to create a scene. Glue the white paper in the center of a sheet of construction paper. This will create a colourful border. Laminate the placemat to ensure it is reusable and washable. Next, give children white napkins. Ask them to reproduce the same designs on their napkin so the two will match.
Creative recipe-Homemade bath salts

1 kilogram Epsom salt
A few drops of food coloring
A few drops of essential oils
- Combine salt and food coloring in a large bowl. Add food coloring one drop at a time and mix well. Adding the food coloring gradually will make obtaining the desired color easier.
- Spread the colored salts in a large tray and let dry for 24 hours.
- Add a few drops of essential oils to scent your salts and mix well.
- Pour into transparent airtight bottles and let rest for at least a week before using to guarantee the scent really penetrates the salts.
- This is a great idea for a Mother's Day or Christmas gift!
Purchase transparent plastic containers with a cork, one per child. Ask children to grate coloured chalk, one color at a time, over paper. Once the chalk is grated, mix it with salt. Pour the mixture into the transparent container. Repeat the operation with other colors until the container is full. Seal with the cork. This makes a beautiful decoration.
(Open Surprise flower) Print and cut out. Glue each flower onto a drinking straw and place them inside a piece of polyester to make a bouquet. Mothers can use a surprise flower whenever they like.
(Open gift certificates-Mother’s Day) Print, cut out, and place the gift certificates inside envelopes. Give each mother one gift certificate.
Cut the bottom of a 2-litre milk container. Place a candlewick in the center. Melt paraffin wax, adding a few drops of essential oil. Pour the wax into the container and set aside. Make sure the wick remains in the center. Once the wax has set, remove the container. You will have a scented candle block.
Flowers for mother
Make your own flowers. You will need tissue paper, construction paper, and various supports for the stems (drinking straws, skewers, paper towel rolls, etc.) Provide plenty of recycled material for children to use to make their flowers.
A little garden for Mom
Purchase a large quantity of dried flowers. Collect branches, pinecones, etc. Give each child a foam block they can use to create a Mother’s Day gift.
A masterpiece for Mom
Have children draw or paint a masterpiece for their mother. (Open frame model) Print, trace onto heavy cardboard, cut out, and decorate the frame. Use it to display the child’s drawing or painting.
This is a Mother’s Day ritual! Make hand prints or footprints by pressing children’s toes or fingers into plaster, salt dough or finger paint. Make a hole at the top so mothers can hang their keepsake. Write the child’s name and age at the bottom so the memory is precise. Once dry, children can paint their prints.
Sunflower pin holder
Cover a yogurt container with green felt. Cut petals out of yellow felt and glue them inside, all around the contour of the container. Cover a Styrofoam ball with brown felt and secure it with a rubber band. Place the ball inside the container. Mothers will no longer lose their sewing pins and needles. They will always be on the sunflower!
Glue a picture (or drawing) of each child on a square piece of cork using Mod Podge. When children are done, apply a coat of varnish.
A small packet for Mom
Give each child a piece of an old lace curtain. Fill it with potpourri and tie it with a knot. Add pretty ribbon.
Make different flower shapes using salt dough. You can let children make their own shapes or provide small molds if you wish. Use a small stick to poke a hole in each shape. Place the shapes in the oven or let them air dry, depending on the salt dough recipe you used. Once the shapes are ready, paint them. Use ribbon to tie the stems together.

A personalized card
Fold a piece of construction paper in half for each child to represent a basic greeting card. Use poster paint to create a personalized flower using children’s hands, fingers, and feet. To begin, have each child paint one of his feet and press it on the front of the card to represent a stem. Next, have them paint the palm of their hand and press it above the stem. Finally, they can press their fingers in paint and make prints around their hand to represent petals. Let dry. Help children write Mother’s Day wishes inside their card.
Spread clay on the table using a rolling pin. Invite children to cut shapes using cookie cutters. Have them make a small hole at the top of each shape using a drinking straw. Let dry. Paint the shapes. Fold a piece of construction paper in two. On the front of the card, in the centre, make a tiny hole and hang the shape using ribbon. Write “Happy Mother’s Day” on the card. Inside, write the message each child wants to offer his mother.

A generation card

Best Mother Diploma
Make a card resembling a diploma.
