Book suggestion theme: Pirate

I myself have never been a fan of pirate tales, however, knowing they appeal to children, I recently used my great big pirate voice to read "Pirate Pete" to my daycare children.

Although this is a fairly long book to read for young children, they all sat wide eyed before me in utter silence. That is, until they caught on to the pirate's repeated motto "...where there's gold I'm a-goin'!" They then gladly used their big pirate voices just as I did!

The tale begins with the pirate stealing a treasure map from the Queen. We then travel with Pirate Pete from island to island in search of gold. Candy Island, Clover Island, Sleepy Island, and Dragon Island are all beautifully illustrated. We had a long lasting discussion as to which island was our favorite (Candy Island of course!).

What I love most about this book is that although the pirate does find the gold, he does not keep it for himself since the Queen arrives just as he opens the treasure chest. After all, as my daycare children righteously declared: "We cannot keep something that does not belong to us"!

This book ended up being as fun for me to read as it was for my daycare children to listen to! I recommend it "matey"!
