Heart-shaped books for our little sweethearts

Here is a crafty reading activity that is perfect for enjoying a little quality time with little ones: make your own heart-shaped books. It's simple. Just follow these steps:

  1. Cut several different pictures and illustrations out of magazines and old books or, if you prefer, use pictures you have on hand.
  2. Cut several identical heart shapes out of construction paper.
  3. Glue the pictures and illustrations you have selected on the hearts (with younger children stick to one picture or illustration per heart).
  4. Use ribbon or metallic rings to bind the hearts together and create a heart-shaped book.

If you wish, you could also do the same thing using a single large piece of cardboard that can be displayed in your reading corner. With Valentine's Day just around the corner, you could even create an oversized book filled with love-themed pictures, illustrations, and words.

Your reading corner could also be decorated with a variety of red, pink, and white items:

  • Cushions
  • A red rug or a heart-shaped rug
  • Heart-shaped garlands
  • Heart-shaped books
  • Pictures of the children in your group looking at books together

Valentine's Day can be celebrated in your reading corner too! Enjoy!
