CIRCLE TIME

I wear a mask

Wear a different mask to greet children each morning.

Every morning, during circle time, set a bin filled with a variety of masks in the center of your circle time area. Invite children to pick a mask and encourage them to wear it for the duration of your discussion period. Every time a child participates in the discussion, let him pick another mask out of your bin. This will make children want to speak and take part in the conversation.

Puppets wearing masksWord flashcards-Masks

Use puppets for their creative aspect. You can invent puppet conversations and encourage children to join in with puppets of their own. You will find several puppet models in the Educatall club.

Circle time-Masks

Before children arrive, glue pictures of masks on items throughout your daycare. Add colorful items to decorate your space and let children explore the decorations to discover the theme.

Hide a different mask within your daycare each morning. It doesn’t have to be completely hidden but finding it should represent a challenge for children. When they find the hidden mask, photograph it and print the picture. Display the pictures on a wall so that children can tell their parents about their daily find at the end of each day. fin. Name a child who will be your “chief” each morning. Grant this child privileges throughout the day.

VARIOUS WORKSHOPS

Have fun with these wonderful workshop ideas provided by Caroline Allard.

Construction and building blocks:Stationery-Masks

  • Cardboard figurines (illustrations on Popsicle sticks) may be used to bring children's constructions to life.
  • Different sizes of cardboard boxes for cardboard constructions.
  • Invite children to create characters with building blocks.

Arts & Crafts:

  • Cut eyes, noses, mouths, faces, and bodies out of catalogues and have children assemble them to create characters. When they are done, glue their characters onto Popsicle sticks or drinking straws.
  • Make puppets using old socks or mittens. Simply draw eyes, a nose, and a mouth using a marker...You can also paint them using fabric paint. You will have original puppets to play with.
  • Trace the contour of children's hands. Cut them out and attach a Popsicle stick to the back for quick and simple puppets.
  • Paper body parts can be assembled with string to create mobiles or puppets. Children can make characters or animals and have fun mixing up body parts which would normally not go together. You may choose to assemble your puppets using fasteners too.Giant word flashcards-Masks-1
  • Various recycled materials are great for making unique puppets too. Add paint, sparkles, etc.
  • Why not make a giant puppet and make it your group's mascot? Use your imagination!
  • Make a papier-mâché puppet. Use a small balloon and cover it with strips of newspaper dipped in glue (leave a space where you can later insert a stick). Let dry, paint, and you have a new puppet!

Drawing:

  • Coloring pages of various animals which can be puppets.
  • Coloring pages with Pinocchio or other well-known puppets on them.
  • Blank sheets of paper, children can create their own puppet models.

Find my mask

Purchase several reusable fabric masks with various prints. Children’s masks are particularly interesting. Set them all in a bin and invite your group to sit around it. Name one child at a time. When you name them, have them pick a mask without touching it. They must describe it by naming its color, the designs, etc. When a child thinks he knows which mask the child giving the glues picked, he can pick it up. If it is the correct mask, the child who guessed correctly will be the next one to pick a mask and give clues to the group.

Activities

For the morning snack, serve fruit and cheese skewers with yogurt or chocolate dip. Add a few drops of food coloring to each child’s glass of milk and decorate the rim of each glass (like a Bloody Cesar) by moistening them and pressing them in colorful sugar crystals.

Organize a parade so that children can show off their costumes or masks. If the weather is nice, why not take your parade along the streets of your neighborhood or even to a nearby nursing home to prolong your activity and spread some joy…

Don’t forget to take plenty of pictures. Print them and insert them in the frames we have created for you. (Open individual frame-Great masquerade) (Open group frame-Great masquerade) You can send a picture frame home with each child at the end of the day.Group frame-Great masquerade

Serve lunch in colorful plastic plates (or Halloween-themed paper plates). Use cookie cutters to cut your sandwiches into Halloween shapes. Prepare bowtie pasta salad with diced cucumbers and cubed orange cheddar cheese. Add as many festive touches to your meal as possible!

For the afternoon nap, purchase glow sticks and build a Halloween-themed cabin with your group. Children will enjoy sleeping in their special construction together. The glow sticks will provide a faint glow.

As an afternoon snack, prepare colorful Halloween cupcakes that children can decorate with Halloween candy pieces.

If you are going outside at the end of the day, let children wear their masks. They will love integrating them in a variety of invented games.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND MOTOR SKILLS

Falling masks-Triple challengeWearable-flippers

Give each child an empty toilet paper roll. Provide bold-colored markers. Encourage children to draw a mask on their cardboard tube. You can show them pictures for inspiration. This step represents their first motor skills challenge because drawing on a rounded surface is far from easy! Once they are done, stack the masks to form a pyramid (second challenge). Children will have fun rolling a small ball towards the pyramid to make it fall down (third challenge).

Diver race

(Open wearable flippers) Print 2 flippers for each child. Laminate them and cut them out. Cut the opening near the heal on each flipper. Children will be able to slide their feet through the holes in their flippers that will then rest on the top of their feet. Create an obstacle course that your little divers can complete while wearing a diving mask.

 Modeling dough activity placemats-Masks

(Open educ-clothespins-Masks) Print and laminate. Children must identify the correct picture using a clothespin.

Is this a mask?

Set a variety of objects in an opaque bag. Be sure to include a few masks. Children take turns sliding their hand in the bag without looking. Encourage them to try to identify an object and state whether it is a mask or not. Each child can ask 2 questions. If a child is unable to identify an object, his turn is over. Whenever a child succeeds, let him be the one who answers the questions for the next player.

Masked pyramidsEduc-clothespins-Masks

(Open lacing-Masks) Print, laminate, and punch holes around the contour of each item. Children can thread a string, ribbon, or shoelace through the holes.

Color classification – Masks

(Ouvrir classification games – Masks) Print and laminate the pages in color. Give a copy of the page with colorful circles on it to each child and set tiny masks in the center of the table. Children must use their thumb and index finger to associate each tiny mask to the correct circle, per its color. This exercise develops fine motor skills.

Where are the masks?Classification games-Masks

(Open game-Masks) Print and laminate for durable, eco-friendly use. Hide the pictures throughout your yard. Children search for them. Every time a child finds a mask, he runs to set it in a basket before setting off to search for another one.

They can also press a Fun Foam letter (for example the first letter of their name) in the center of the badge.

Masquerade ball mask

Give each child ½ a paper plate with a ribbed edge. The rounded part must be at the top. Let them cut the straight bottom and the sides to give their ½ plate an original mask shape. Have them paint it with black poster paint. Let dry. Using pastel crayons or glitter glue, have them trace the lines at the top of their mask to represent colorful feathers. They can paint details or glue tiny gems on their mask. They place their hand diagonally on the folded paper, lining the palm of their hand up with the fold. They open their fingers, but leave their thumb pressed against their index finger. Trace each child’s hand. They cut out the outline, leaving the fold untouched. When they open up their work, they will have the base of a pretty mask. Help them cut out 2 holes for the eyes. Let children decorate their mask as they see fit. When they are done, you can glue a small dowel vertically behind one side of their mask so they can easily hold it up in front of their face.
